Abstract

The invention comprises complexes of the formula (I) A-M-B where A is the residue of an azo dye of formula (II):- <FORM:0865410/IV(c)/1> where R1 is a nitro, carboxylic acid, sulphonic acid, alkylsulphonyl, arylsulphonyl, methoxy or, possibly substituted, carboxylic acid amide or sulphonamide group, R2 is H or a halogen, methyl or methoxy group, R3 is H, halogen or alkyl, X is a carbonyl or sulphonyl group, and Y is an alkyl, phenyl, alkyloxy or, possibly substituted, amino group which may be a member of a heterocyclic ring, M is a metal atom of atomic number 24 to 29 and B is the residue of a coloured or colourless complex-forming compound. They are made by metallizing a dye of formula:- <FORM:0865410/IV(c)/2> either alone or in admixture with a coloured compound corresponding to B to provide a 1, 2-complex, or by treating appropriate complexes containing less than 2 dye radicals per metal atom with colourless or coloured complex forming compounds. Chromium and cobalt are preferred metals. The dyes dye wool, silk, casein wool, leather and poly-amide and -urethane fibres. They colour organic solutions and plastic masses e.g. cellulose esters, varnishes, cellulose ethers and synthetic resins and may be used in the spin-dyeing of artificial fibres such as acetate silk.
