Abstract

The invention comprises metal complexes of water-insoluble azo dyes, free from sulphonic or carboxylic acid groups, of formula <FORM:0973356/C4-C5/1> where X is N, CH or C-alkyl, a may contain groups which do not impart water-solubility, A is a coupling component residue which has at least one OH group and couples in an adjacent position to an OH group and n is 1 or 2. The complexes are made in conventional fashion by metallizing dyes obtained from appropriate heterocyclic diazo and coupling components. The complexes may be formed in substance or on the fibre or some other substratum. Specified groups for a are halogen atoms and nitro, alkyl, alkoxy, acylamino or trifluoro-methyl groups. Illustrative of indicated coupling components are p-cresol, 4-hydroxy-acetophenone, 4-chloro-1-naphthol, 2-methoxy-7-naphthol, 1-benzoylamino - 7 - naphthol, 4 - phenylazo - 1 - amino - 7 - naphthol, resorcinol, 2,6-dihydroxynaphthalene, 3,6 - dihydroxydiphenylene oxide, 6 - hydroxyquinoline, 2 - hydroxycarbazole, 1 -aryl - 3 - methyl - 5 - pyrazolones, and especially arylamides of aromatic or heterocyclic orthohydroxycarboxylic acids, or of acylacetic acids, e.g. 2,3 - hydroxynaphthoic acids, 2 - hydroxy-anthracene - 3 - carboxylic acid, 5 - hydroxy - 1,2,11,21 - benzocarbazole - 4 - carboxylic acid, acetoacetic acid and terephthaloyl-bis-acetic acid. The dyes colour vegetable fibres, including regenerated cellulose, animal fibres, e.g. wool and silk, and synthetic fibres, e.g. polyamide or polyvinyl alcohol fibres. Organic plastic masses may be coloured. Preferred metals are Cu, Co, Ni, Mn, Zn or Fe. Numerous examples are provided of the preparation of the dyes and their use in colouring cotton in a variety of shades.
