Abstract

The invention comprises complex metal compounds of water-insoluble dyes of formula <FORM:0973884/C4-C5/1> in which A and B are residues of the benzene or naphthalene series, free from sulphonic and carboxylic groups, and R is a coupling component residue, free from sulphonic and carboxylic acid groups and coupling in a position adjacent to the OH group with the exception of arylamides of aromatic or heterocyclic orthohydroxycarboxylic acids or of acylacetic acids. The dyes may be made in conventional fashion by diazotization, coupling and metallization. The dyes may be formed in substance, on the fibre or on some other substratum. Preferably R is a benzene, naphthalene, carbazole or diphenylene oxide residue. The coupling component may be substituted by e.g. a halogen atom or a hydroxyl, alkyl, phenyl-amino or benzoyl group. The diazo components of the parent Specification 951,452 may be used and include amines substituted by halogen atoms and alkyl, alkoxy, aryloxy, acylamino, trifluoromethyl and carboxylic acid amide groups. Illustrative of indicated coupling components are p-cresol, 4-hydroxy-acetophenone, hydroquinone monomethyl ether, 4-chloro, methoxy and benzoyl-1-naphthol, b -naphthol, 1-benzoylamino - 7 - naphthol, 4 - benzeneazo - 1 - amino- 7 - naphthol, 6 - hydroxyquinoline, 3 - hydroxydiphenylene oxide, 1-aryl-3-methyl-5-pyrazolones, resorcinol, 2,6-dihydroxynaphthalene and 3,6 - dihydroxydiphenylene oxide. Preferred metals are copper, cobalt and nickel. The dyes colour vegetable fibres, including those of regenerated cellulose, animal fibres, e.g. wool and silk, and synthetic fibres, e.g. polyamide and polyvinyl alcohol fibres and may also be used for colouring plastic masses. Examples are provided of the preparation of the dyes and their use in colouring cotton in a variety of shades. Representative of diazo components used in the Examples are 2-(21-amino-41,51-diethoxyphenyl) - 6 - chloro- or methoxy-, 2 - (21 - amino - 41 - methoxy - 51 - acetylaminophenyl) -, 2 - (21 - amino - naphthyl - 11) - 6 - methyl - and 2 - (21 - amino - 41,51 - dimethylphenyl) - benztriazole - 1 - oxide.
