Abstract

The invention comprises dyes free from SO3H groups of formula (X-M-Y)-Q+ where X is the radical of a dye of formula: <FORM:0853786/IV (c)/1> where A is an aniline residue bearing a metallisable group #s to the amino group, B is a coupling component residue containing a hydroxyl or primary or secondary amino group in an adjacent position to the point of coupling, m is 1 or 2 and n 3 to 7, Y is either a dye of formula X or any other metallisable azo or azo-methine dye free from SO3H groups, M is a metal of Atomic Number 24 to 29 and Q+ is the equivalent of a cation. They are made by conventional metallisation, diazotisation and coupling processes. The metal-free dyes used as starting material may also be made by reacting appropriate dyes containing sulphonamide groups with a compound of formula: <FORM:0853786/IV (c)/2> where R1 is an alkyl group. Q+ is specified as H, K, Na or NH4. Metal-complex forming groups specified are OH, OAlk, COOH and toluene-sulphonic acid ester groups. The diazo and coupling components may contain substituents such as halogen atoms, cyano, alkyl, alkoxy, nitro, trifluoromethyl, sulphonamide (may be substituted), carboxylic and amide and/or alkyl-or arylsulphone groups. The dyes colour lacquers and materials of polyesters and cellulose esters. Fibres of wool and polyamides may be dyed, padded or printed from a weak acid to a weak alkali bath. Examples are provided of the preparation of chromium and cobalt complexes representative of the diazo component moieties being 2- hydroxy -5- chlor-, 2- hydroxy -4-ethylsulphonyl and 2- methoxyanilines, <FORM:0853786/IV (c)/3> and anthranilic acid, typical of the coupling components moieties being the reaction product of phenol -4- sulphonamide with caprolactim-O-methyl ether, 2- naphthol, 1- carbomethoxy-amino -7- naphthol, <FORM:0853786/IV (c)/4> acetoacetyl-amino-benzene and -butane, N-methyl -4- hydroxy -a - quinolone and 2- naphthylamine, and the complexes are used to dye wool and polyamides in blue, red and yellow shades.
