Abstract

The invention comprises the complex metal compounds of water-insoluble azo dyes of formula <FORM:0981193/C4-C5/1> wherein R1 and R2 are hydrogen atoms or alkyl or aryl radicals which may be combined to form an isocyclic ring, A is the radical of an arylamide of an aromatic or heterocyclic o-hydroxycarboxylic acid or of an acylacetic acid, n is 1 or 2 and the benzene nucleus a may be substituted by groups which do not impart water-solubility. The complexes are prepared by coupling a diazotized 5-aminoquinoxaline with a suitable coupling component and treating the resultant dye with a metallizing agent such as a salt or complex compound of copper, cobalt, nickel, manganese, iron, zinc, chromium, aluminium or titanium. The dyes may also be prepared on the fibre (see Division D1). The dyes may be used to dye nitrogenous fibres and to colour in the mass materials such as polyamides, polyurethanes, polyesters, acetylcellulose polyacrylonitriles and polyolefines. In Example 3 the dye 5 - amino - 2,3,7 - trimethyl - quinoxaline -->2,3-hydroxynaphthoylaminobenzene is prepared and treated with an aqueous solution of copper sulphate and triethanolamine.ALSO:Complex metal compounds of water-insoluble azo dyes of formula <FORM:0981193/D1-D2/1> are prepared on the fibre by the usual processes. In the formula R1 and R2 are hydrogen atoms or alkyl or aryl radicals or together form an isocyclic ring, A is the radical of an arylamide of an aromatic or heterocyclic o-hydroxycarboxylic acid or of an acylacetic acid n is 1 or 2 and the benzene nucleus a may be substituted by non-water-solubilising groups. The metal-free dye may be formed on the fibre and the dyeing then treated with a metallising agent or the coupling component applied to the fibre which is then developed in a bath containing a diazotised 5-aminoquinoxaline and a metallising agent. Specified fibres are wool, silk, synthetic polyamide, acetyl cellulose or polyvinyl alcohol fibres or, in particular, cotton. Specified metallising agents are the salts and complex compounds of copper, cobalt nickel, iron, manganese, chromium, zinc, aluminium or titanium. In examples: (1) cotton fabric is padded with an alkaline solution of 2-(21, 31-hydroxynaphthoylamino)-naphthalene, centrifuged and developed in a solution containing diazotised 5-amino-2, 3, 7-trimethylquinoxaline and copper sulphate to give a red dyeing; (2) describes a similar process but wherein the dye is prepared on cotton and then coppered.
