Abstract

The invention comprises 1, 1-metal complexes of dyes of formula:- <FORM:0868284/IV(c)/1> where R is an aryl residue and R1 and R11 identical or different phenyl or naphthyl radicals which contain a hydroxy or thiol group in #s-position to the N atom and which may be further substituted, the metal having an atomic number of 24 to 30. The dyes are made by reacting appropriate arylazo-malonodialdehydes with at least one primary phenyl- or naphthyl-amine which contains the necessary hydroxy or thiol group and metallizing the product. Metallization may also be effected at the same time as dye formation. Indicated substituents for R, R1 and R11 are halogen, sulpho, carboxy, sulphonamide and carboxylic acid amide, alkylsulphone, arylsulphone, aryl azo, alkoxy, nitro and acylamino groups. Copper, nickel, cobalt, iron, zinc and chromium are specified metals. The dyes colour lacquers, plastics and natural and synthetic fibres, especially wool, silk and synthetic polyamide fibres. Examples are provided of the preparation of the dyes and their use in dyeing processes, various colours being obtained.
