Abstract

851,818. Moulding footwear soles. NEWMAN, J., and NEWMAN'S FOOTWEAR Ltd., [formerly NEWMAN'S SLIPPERS Ltd.]. Oct. 1, 1957 [Oct. 1, 1956], No. 29928/56. Class 87(2). A mould for bonding shoe soles to shoe uppers includes a cavity 31 defined by the integral side and base portions of the mould, the junction between the side and base surfaces of the cavity 31 being smoothly rounded, and the cavity 31 having an inwardly projecting lip 34. formed along its inner upper edge. The mould is divided into two integral portions 30A, B along a plane passing through the centre line of the sole and at an angle to its undersurface. As shown in Fig. 4, the mould is divided along a plane perpendicular to the sole undersurface and the two mould portions 30A, B are hinged together at one end about an axis 35 lying in their plane of division and are provided with clamping means 36 at their other end for holding them in their closed position. In using the mould an outer sole 40 cut to its desired final size and shape is inserted into the cavity 31 and the partly cured intermediate sole 41, of foam rubber, thermosetting resin or other moulding material placed above it, after which the shoe upper 42 on last 43 is placed in position and the mould heated.
