Abstract
927,089. Moulding soles to uppers. LAMBERT HOWARTH & SONS Ltd. Dec. 29, 1961 [Jan. 5, 1961], No. 446/61. Class 17 (2). [Also in Group V] A heel C and a covering c, and a sole B are moulded to an upper d, on a last O, in a mould consisting of a base-plate 1, with a recess for the heel tread, and a ring 2. In the mould are placed the sole unit B consisting of a skin b of partly cured rubber or like material and a rubber mix b<SP>1</SP> containing an expanding agent, and the heel unit C consisting of a wooden or plastic core surrounded by partly cured rubber or like material c<SP>2</SP>, the outer covering c of leather or other compound, and a heel tread c<SP>l</SP>. The sole and heel units are vulcanized by heat. The covering material c may match the upper, may be any number of ply and may be secured to a stiffening ply by adhesive. A lip may be provided around part or the whole of the mould. The skin b may extend below the ring at the heel end and may cover or be covered by the heel tread c<SP>1</SP>, or a further tread may be applied over the skin after the moulding operation. In a modification the heel is formed by placing the covering c in the mould and adding a filling material with strips of vulcanizable material to form the core of the heel.
