Abstract
A method of purifying mixtures of soap and fatty acyl aminomethane sulphonate, in which the sulphonate is suitably derived from mixed C12-C18 fatty acids of which not more than 50% are unsaturated, preferably palm kernel fatty acyl aminomethane sulphonate, consists in boiling the mixture with additional water together, if necessary, with additional salt, so that the upper layer which forms on settling consists essentially of a purified mixture of soap and sulphonate, and the lower layer consists of an aqueous solution containing the bulk of the inorganic salts. Fatty amides may be present in the composition in amounts either (a) so that when the weight ratio of sulphonate to soap is not greater than 1.5, the amide comprises not more than 12% by weight of the sulphonate, or (b) so that when the weight ratio of sulphonate to soap is not greater than 3:7, the amide comprises not more than a third by weight of the sulphonate. Rosin soaps may also be present, and the final purified mixture generally contains less than 2% salt. The aqueous layer containing the inorganic salts, is suitable when separated for re-use in a further salting-out treatment. According to the Provisional Specification, a similar purification procedure may be applied to compositions containing, in addition to soap, alkyl sulphates, fatty monoglyceride sulphates, fatty alkane sulphonates, fatty acyl oxyalkane sulphonates, alkylaryl sulphonates, fatty alkyl phosphates, fatty acyl aminoalkane carboxylates, and other fatty acyl aminoalkane sulphonates.
