Abstract

849,163. Coated fabrics. BROWN, N. J. Jan. 21, 1957, No. 2128/57. Class 140. Woven textile fabrics are rendered waterproof and crease-resistant by immersing the fabric for a period of between 2 and 5 seconds in a solution heated to between 120‹ and 140‹ F., said solution containing a copolymer of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate, a volatile solvent for said copolymer and a plasticizer, the solution penetrating the interstices between the fibres but does not impregnate the fibres, thereafter heating the fabric to between 140‹ and 160‹ F. to volatilize the volatile constituents of the solution. The textile fabric may be of cotton, wool, viscose or nylon and the volatile solvents, e.g. methyl ethyl ketone and toluene, may be volatilized by heating to between 140‹ and 160‹ F. for a period of 30 to 45 seconds. Vinyl chloride monomer is a suitable plasticizer and barium, cadmium, or a liquid epoxy resin may be present as stabilizer.
