Abstract

A flexible, porous, abrasion-resistent woven fabric suitable for use for vehicle upholstery is produced by treating a woven fabric with a polymeric composition in such a manner that the uppermost fibres only of the yarns forming the face of the fabric are tightly bound together and a substantial but evenly distributed proportion of the yarns of the face are free to move relative to adjacent yarns. The face and backing yarns of the fabric may comprise continuous filament or spun yarns and may comprise viscose rayon, polyamide, polyester, acrylonitrile polymer or copolymer, polyethylene polypropylene polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene, cellulose acetate, ethylcellulose cotton flax, jute, hemp, ramie, paper, wool, alpaca, vicuna, mohair, cashmere, guanaco, camel's hair, silk llama yarns. The polymeric material applied may be a copolymer of acrylic acid with methyl or ethyl acrylate, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride, a polyvinyl ether, polyvinylacetate, polyacrylonitrile, abutadiene-styrene copolymer, a polymethane, an epoxy resin a polyester a polyamide or a polycarbonate and may also contain small amounts of an aminoplast or phenoplast. The polymeric composition may be applied to the fabric as an aqueous solution or emulsion or dissolved or emulsified in an organic medium, e.g. methanol or ethanol, by spraying or by means of trough apparatus comprising an open-bottomed trough buried with a porous material, preferably of nylon, so that the porous extends through the open-bottomed trough to form a bag-like protuberance and through which the polymeric composition is released in small amounts when contact is made with the fabric treated, the flow of the polymeric composition optically being controlled by placing a synthetic sponge in the opening in the trough separating the nylon bag and the trough. After the application of the polymeric composition the fabric may be dried rapidly by flash drying at 100 DEG -200 DEG C. by means of hot air ovens or infra-red lamp arrays the fabric preferably being supported on a cool glass plate. Hot air may be blown from the backing through to the face of the fabric forcing the polymeric composition towards the face of the fabric. A small amount of migration of the polymeric composition into the backing yarns of the fabric is permissible provided the fibres in the backing yarns are no more than loosely held together and the backing yarns remain free to move relative to adjacent fibres and yarns.
