Abstract

A process for colouring fabrics having loosely and tightly constructed areas comprises the steps: (1) saturating the fabric with a liquid, (2) padding while still wet with a dispersion of a pigment of particle size 1-1500 microns while the fabric and dispersion are both maintained electro-statically neutral, (3) applying a binder for the pigment adhering to the loosely constructed areas and preferably (4) heating with a wash-fastness agent and a binder for the pigment and thereafter heating to bond the pigment. The fabrics may be of cellulose, acrylic polymers, polyesters, polyamide, polyvinyl or vinylidene chloride, polyolefin, polyurethane or blends thereof and especially glass fibres. The fabrics may be woven from textured yarns or uniform fabrics may be napped or flocked. Liquid (1) may be aqueous and contain binder, fibre protectant/lubricant, abrasion resistance agent, water repellant, delucterant or a solution or dispersion of a dye or pigment as well as sizes and softeners. Both fabric and treatment baths may be electrically grounded by various specified means. The desired pigment particle size may be obtained by the use of a flocculating agent (many specified). Examples of colouring glass fibre boucl<\>e fabrics are given.
