Abstract

Pile fabric is treated on the surface of the pile with a dilute colloidal aqueous solution of a synthetic resin, the softening point of which is at least about 175 DEG F. and which is selected from polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl acetate, vinylchloride-vinylidene chloride interpolymers, polystyrene and styrene-butadiene interpolymers, and the fabric is then dried at a temperature below the softening point, so that a coating of discrete particles of the resin is obtained. An anionic emulsifying agent such as sodium lauryl sulphate may be used to form the colloidal solution. Polyvinyl chloride resins may be plasticised with glycerine or dibutyl phthalate. The pile may be spun from viscose rayon, acetate rayon, nylon, polyvinylchloride, cotton or jute or mixtures of these with one another or with wool.
