Abstract

909,213. Agglutinated fibrous materials; felt. LANTOR Ltd. May 10, 1961 [March 10, 1960], No. 8415/60. Classes 42 (2) and 140. A method of manufacturing a non-woven fabric comprises the steps of bonding together in the form of a web a mixture of substantially heat-stable fibres and at least 10% by weight of thermoplastic fibres which will shrink at least 10% in length on heating and then heating the web of bonded fibres to a temperature at which the thermoplastic fibres shrink but below the temperature at which they fuse. Bonding may be effected by needle punching or by means of a polymeric bonding agent. The web may be composed of up to 90% thermoplastic fibres, preferably acrylic or vinyl, of the type referred to above; the balance of fibres may be any natural or synthetic fibres, e.g. cotton, wool, rayon, nylon, or " Acrilan " (Registered Trade Mark) fibres. The web may be heated in air, water or a liquid which does not dissolve or chemically attack the fibres. Thermoplastic fibres which will shrink 25% or more in length on heating may be used. Bonding agents used must have a higher fusing temperature than the shrinking temperature of the fibres. Specified bonding agents are polyacrylate resin, copolymers of acrylonitrile and butadiene, and nitrile synthetic rubber latex. Specification 659,688 is referred to.
