Abstract

[Also in Group XVI] In a manifolding machine using continuous stationery the interleaved transfer webs are mounted on reels 22 fixed on spindles 30 normally clutched to a release mechanism comprising a worm wheel 24. The spindle 30 is mounted at one end within a counter-bore of an axle 28 and at the other end fits over the head of a rod 43. Normally a spring 47 engaging a collar 46 on the rod 43 forces a key 32 of the spindle 30 to clutch a slot in the end of the axle 28, but depression of a button 35 acting through a spindle 34 disengages. the clutch and engages the spindle 30 to a hand wheel 45 by means of a key and slot connection 50, 51 to allow rotation of the reel 22 during threading of the transfer web through the machine. When the button 35 is depressed it may be twisted so that a pin 39 engages behind a frame member 36 to hold the clutch disengaged or the button may be depressed sufficiently to allow removal of the spindle 30 from the axle 28.
