The above condition holds when the pressure roll frame I3 is lifted to facilitate feeding paper to the machine. When this is accomplished, hcwever, the frame I3 is replaced to put the rolls Il in contact with the paper mounted platen, and a portion of said frame is arranged to engage an extension 33 of the nger 30 to counteract the force of the spring 32 to lift said finger from contact with the duplicating ribbon. Hence said ribbon is freed to be moved by movement of the spools. l

In order to expedite feeding of the paper to the machine, it is desirable to raise the duplicating ribbon and its guard tape and yet leave the hands free to accomplish the paper feeding. To this end the frame I6 is provided with a cross member 24 pivoted to the frame arms I1 at 35, and provided with one or more offset portions 3 adapted to lie at against the platen when the frame and its ribbon are in thelow position.

In order to raise the ribbon and its guard out of operative position so that a single copy may be made, a handle extension 31 of the cross member 3l may be swung to bring the offset portions 36 thereof in right angular engagement with the surface of the platen I2. This condition is shown by the dotted lines of Fig. 3.

With the duplicating ribbon and its guard so raised, it is a simple matter to feed two sheets of paper to the machine, one being fed between the platen and the ribbon and'guard and the other outside said ribbon and guard as shown in Fig. 4 by the respective sheets A and B.

Now, as best seen in Fig. 5, when a type bar 38 strikes the ribbon 22a, an impression will be made on the sheet B from said ribbon 22a and an impression will be made on sheet A from the duplicating ribbon 22, the guard tape 28 serving to prevent the rear surface of sheet B from being inked by the latter ribbon.

If a third ribbon typed copy is desired, the guard tape 28 may be easily removed as indicated and a transparent sheet, preferably onion skin may be fed to the machine between the duplicating ribbon and the outer sheet -B. Thus said duplicating ribbon will print upon the rear of the onion skin also, said printing being readable from the unprinted side of said sheet. Hence 'either two or three ribbon typel copies may be obtained in an emcient manner.

From the foregoing it may be readily seen that a simple and efficient mechanism has been provided for the purpose intended. However, despite its simplicity, the mechanism may be modified within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. In a typewriting machine having a carriage supporting a platen and having a typewriter ribbon and a pair of spools therefonin combination, a second ribbon, spools for saidfsecond ribbon mounted respectively on the first mentioned spools and movable therewith, a swingable frame mounted on said carriage, and means on said frame for guiding said second ribbon.

2'. In a typewriting machine having a carriage supporting a platen and a swingable frame having pressure rolls for'eontact with said platen and having a` typewriter ribbon and a pair of spoolstherefor, in combination, a second ribbon,

spools for said second ribbon mounted respectively on the first mentionedfspools and movable therewith, a second swingable frame mounted on said carriage, means on said second frame for guiding said second ribbon, and means for clamping said ribbon during feeding of paper to the machine, said clamping means being disengageable from said ribbon by the first mentioned frame.

3. In a typewriting machine, a duplicating ribbon, a pair of spools for said ribbon respectively mounted upon the ribbonspools of the machine, a swingable frame carried by the carriage of the machine, means on said frame for guiding said ribbon parallel to the platen of said machine, and means carried by said frame and having contact withsaidv platen for maintaining said frame in raised position during feeding of paper to the machine.

4. In a typewriting machine, a duplicating ribbon, a pair of spools for said ribbon respectively mounted upon the ribbon spools of the machine, a swingable frame carried by the carriage of the machine, means on said frame for guiding said ribbon parallel to the platen of said machine, a

guard tape carried by said frame in front of said ribbon, and means carried by said frame and having contact with said platen for maintaining said frame and said ribbon and guard tape in raised position during feeding of paper to the machine.

5. A duplicating attachment for typewriting machines comprising a frame adapted to be raised and lowered in relation to the platen of said machine, means for maintaining said frame in raised position during feeding of paper to said machine, a duplicating ribbon, means on said frame for guiding said ribbon along the longitudinal surface of said platen, a pair of spools for said ribbon, and means for mounting said spools on the respective spools of the machine for movement therewith.

6. A duplicating attachment for typewriting machines comprising a frame adapted to be raised and lowered in relation to the platen of said machine, means for maintaining said frame in raised position during feeding of paper to said machine, a duplicating ribbon, means on said frame for guiding said ribbon along the longitudinal surface of said platen, a guard tape carried by said frame and disposed along the front of said ribbon, a pair of spools for said ribbon, and means for mounting said spools on the respective spools of the machine for movement therewith.

7. In a typewriting machine, a duplicating ribbon, a pair of spools for said ribbon respectively mounted upon the ribbon spools of the machine, a swingable frame carried by the carriage of the machine, means on said frame for guiding said ribbon parallel to the platen of said machine. a translucent guard tape carried by said frame in front of said ribbon, and means carried by said frame and having contact with said platen for maintaining said frame and said ribbon and guard tape in raised position during feeding of paper to the machine.

8. A duplicating attachment for typewriting machines comprising a frame adapted to be raised and lowered in relation to the platen of said machine, means for maintaining said frame .in raised position during feeding of paper to said machine, a duplicating ribbon, means on said frame for guiding said ribbon along the longitudinal surface of said platen, a guard tape of silk-like material carried by said frame and disposed alongthe front of said ribbon, a pair of adsense i 3 spools for said ribbon, and means for mounting said spools on the respective spools of the machine for movement therewith.

9. In a typewriting machine having a carriage supporting a platen and having a typewriter ribbon and' a pair of spools therefor, in combination, a second ribbon, spools for said second ribbon mounted respectively on the rst mentioned spools and movable therewith, a swlngable frame mounted on said carriage, means on said frame for guiding said second ribbon, and means for clamping said secondribbon during feeding of paper to the machine, said 'clamping means being disengageable from said second ribbon.

10. In a typewriting machine having a carriage supporting a platen and having a typewriter ribbon and a pair of spools therefor, in combination, a second ribbon, spools for said second ribbon mounted respectively on the rst mentioned spools and movable therewith, means for exerting a drag on at least one of said spools for said second ribbon, a swingable frame mounted on said carriage. means on said frame for guiding said second ribbon, and means for clamping said second ribbon during feeding of paper to the machine, said clamping means beingdisengageable from said second ribbon.

In a typewriting machine having a carriage supporting a platen and a swingable frame having pressure rolls for contact with said platen and having a typewriter ribbon and a pair of spools'therefor, in combination, a second ribbon, spools for said second ribbon mounted respectively on the iirst mentioned spools and movable therewith, means for exerting a drag on at least one of said lspools for said second ribbon, a second swingable frame mounted on said carriage, means on said second frame for guiding said second ribbon, and means for clamping said ribbon during feeding of paper to the machine, said clamping. means being disengageable from said ribbon by the rst mentioned frame.
