[Class 100 (iv)] In typewriters having a platen which can be displaced from the feed-rollers to permit retraction of a carbon-sheet trolley, release of the platencatches and displacement of the platen are affected by applying the hand to a paper-supporting bar pivoted on the platen-frame. In the construction shown in the Figure, the frame 20 supporting the platen 11 is mounted on trunnions 22 on the carriage 10 and can be rocked forwardly to separate the platen from the feed-rollers, the rocking movement being limited by engagement of stops 27 on the platen-frame with projections 28 on the carriage: The platen-frame is held in normal position by spring-urged catches 32 which are pivoted at 33 to the carriage and engage the platen-spindle 19. A paper-supporting bar 30 is secured to a rod 37 connecting spring-urged arms 36 which are pivoted at 35 to the platen-frame and are provided with studs 39 for engaging fingers 40 on the catches 32. Studs 44, 42 limit rocking of the catches and arms. The bar carries an adjustable sheet-stop 31. When the paper-bar 30 is pulled forwards, the catches are released by co-operation of the studs 39 and fingers 40, and the platen-frame is then rocked forwardly to separate the platen from the feed-rollers. The sheet passes along the front of the bar 30, and can be gripped thereto by the hand. When the paperbar is returned, the platen is restored, the platenspindle co-operating with the fingers 40 to move aside the catches and then allow re-engagement thereof.
