Abstract

845,923. Wall cladding. SELLECK, NICHOLLS & CO. Ltd. Sept. 5, 1958 [Sept. 6. 1957; Oct. 23, 1957], Nos. 28233/57 and 33091/57. Classes 20(4) and 87(1) A building structure is provided with a cladding wall formed of prefabricated concrete slabs having reinforcing rods 6, Fig. 1, therein the slabs being placed side by side and connected by tensioning means engaging the projecting ends of the reinforcing rods to form a composite beam capable of supporting its own weight between spaced apart mountings 33, Fig. 8. In Fig. 1 the ends of the rods are formed into loops 7 which are exposed by recesses 2a, the loops of adjacent slabs being engaged by hooks 12, 12a, Fig. 10, which are carried by a bolt 13 and urged together to tension the rods by screws 14. In a modification, Fig. 11, the tensioning means comprises hooks 15 which pass through a plate 16 and are tightened up by screws 17. Alternatively the slabs may be provided with holes through which reinforcing rods are passed after the slabs are placed in position and subsequently tensioned. The slabs may form an upper storey wall between transverse side walls 32, Fig. 8, e.g. of a terrace of houses, and the slab opposite the side wall is provided with an upper rib 2b, Fig. 9, which engages over a correpondingly shaped corbel stone 33 built into the wall. The upper end of the slabbing is retained by a wooden sill member 40, 41, Figs. 7 and 9, keyed to the side walls and metal straps 35 secured to the reinforcing rods 7 are fastened to vertical beams 36 secured between the floor 37 and the sill member 40, fibre glass insulation 48 being inserted between the slabs and the timbers 36. In a modification, Fig. 5, the reinforcing rods 20 of the slabs 18 are screw-threaded and passed through blocks 25 for tensioning by screws 26 and the upper rib of a panel opposite a side wall is provided with a projection 28 having holes 29 adapted to engage pegs on a corbel stone projecting from the side wall. The cladding may be hung on steel corbels bolted to the faces of vertical stanchions of a steel framed or reinforced concrete structure.
