Abstract
Cellulosic textile fabrics are subjected to a brief treatment with a gaseous mixture, preferably an aerosol, of an organo silicon halide and an "inert" gas at a temperature below 100 DEG F. and are immediately neutralized in a mild alkaline solution and dried under tension, preferably weft-wise. The gaseous treatment may be for one second to five minutes and the "inert" gas, which does not participate in the reaction, may be air. The silicon halide may be CH3SiCl3, CH3SiHCl2, (CH3)2SiCl2, (CH3)3SiCl or commercial mixtures thereof which may also contain silicon tetrachloride or ethyl, propyl or butyl-silicon halides. The gaseous mixture may be an aerosol formed by cooling a saturated atmosphere of the silane. The neutralizing solution may be a solution of sodium carbonate or bicarbonate, calcium hydroxide, disodium or trisodium phosphate or sodium acetate at a pH of 7 to 11. The drying may be effected under anhydrous conditions or in the presence of moisture to obtain water-repellency. In Example 1 the fabric is permitted to dry in air and in Example 2 is dried in an oven at 220 DEG F., the gaseous treatment in both examples being effected at 75 DEG F. Tension during drying may be effected in both weft and warp directions. The fabrics treated may be of cotton, regenerated cellulose, or cellulose acetate. Specificatio 845,119 is referred to.
