Abstract

678,585. Finishing fabrics. KOSTRING, F. April 5, 1950 [April 5, 1949], No. 8618/50. Class 42 (i). In a method of finishing fabric, especially woollen fabric, a length of fabric is smoothed, after wet dressing or moistening if dry, by being passed while maintained in the damp state over one or more smooth heated surfaces, then passed without tension over a heated metal surface of large area in order to dry it and achieve a certain smoothing and glazing effect, then damped with the application of heat and moisture, then brought into a freezing chamber and freed from tension, and finally freed from excess moisture and flat-pressed under light pressure. In the first treatment stage the fabric may be passed between a moistened felt wrapper and a rotating heated metal cylinder, and over the latter. A part of the excess moisture may then be removed by suction, and the fabric passed without tension around a large heated decatizing drum against which it is pressed by a felt wrapper and which imparts the glazing effect. The fabric may now be sheared and fluffed up and then passed over a steaming box in front of and behind which are atomizer nozzles which blow a fine mist of water against the moving fabric; or the fabric may be guided between damp felt and a heated rotating drum. The moistened fabric is then put into the freezing chamber, preferably at a temperature of - 1 ‹ to - 200 C. After freezing, the excess moisture may be removed by passing the fabric, with the aid of a wrapper, around heated metal surfaces during or after which treatment it is subjected to moist air. The final treatment may be effected between press-boards successively in hot chambers at about 70 C., and cold chambers at slightly over 0‹ C.
