845,119. Waterproofing fabrics. ROBBART, E. Feb. 15, 1957, No. 40504/59. Divided out of 845,118. Class 140. Cellulosic textile fabric is rendered waterrepellent by allowing it to acquire a moisturecontent by exposure in an atmosphere of 30 to 90% relative humidity, then passing it continuously through a chamber having an aerosol atmosphere of an organo-silicon halide, then through a neutralizing bath of an alkaline aqueous solution to remove acidic by-products, and then drying the treated fabric. Methyl, ethyl, propyl and butyl silicon halides which may contain some silicon tetrachloride are suitable organo-silicon compounds, and the alkali may be sodium carbonate, bicarbonate or acetate, disodium phosphate or calcium hydroxide dissolved in water to give a solution of pH 7 to 11. A wetting-agent may be included in the neutralizing bath.
