Abstract
Cellulose alkyl hydroxyalkyl ethers are prepared by causing cellulose to absorb from 1.2-2.8 mols. of aqueous alkali metal hydroxide per anhydroglucose unit at 15-30 DEG C. and treating the resulting alkali cellulose at 20-140 DEG C. with an amount of alkyl halide (having 1 or 2 carbon atoms) approximately equivalent to the alkali metal hydroxide absorbed by the cellulose, and with an alkylene oxide (having 2-4 carbon atoms) until substantially all of the alkyl halide and from 0.1-0.5 part by weight of alkylene oxide per part of cellulose has reacted. Preferably the alkyl halide and alkylene oxide are brought into contact with the alkali cellulose simultaneously. Methyl and ethyl chlorides are the preferred alkyl halides. The products are water-soluble and their solutions show reduced viscosity hysteresis effects. Examples are given.
