Abstract
The invention comprises 1 : 1-dihydroperfluoroalkyl - trialkyl ammonium halide or hydroxide having the formula <FORM:0758156/IV(a)/1> the alkyl groups having 1-5 C atoms, the same or different, n being 3-9 and X, halogen or hydroxyl. The products may be prepared by conversion of a fluorocarbon acid chloride to disubstituted amide, reduction to tertiaryamine, conversion of this to quaternary salt by addition, and conversion to hydroxide, if desired, with silver oxide. An example is given of the preparation of N : N-diethylperfluorobutyramide from the corresponding acid chloride, its reduction with LiAlH4, to the tertiary N : N - diethyl - (1 : 1 - dihydroperfluorobutylamine, and the conversion of this to quaternary salt with methyl iodide, and to hydroxide therefrom. The trifluoroacetate salt is referred to. The products are surface-active, being oleophobic and hydrophobic. Specification 686,678 is referred to.
