Abstract

A thermoplastic composition comprises 2-90 per cent by weight of a water-soluble alkyl hydroxyalkyl cellulose ether in which the hydroxyalkyl group contains 2 or 3 carbon atoms, the alkyl group contains 1-3 carbon atoms, the O-H/C-H ratio is from 0.88 to 1.05 and the melting point is at least 10 DEG C. below the decomposition temperature, and 98-10 per cent by weight of propylene glycol. Specified cellulose ethers are methyl hydroxypropyl cellulose and ethyl hydroxypropyl cellulose. Typical ethers are obtainable by treating cellulose with aqueous caustic soda solution to give an alkali cellulose with a NaOH/cellulose ratio from 0.7 to 1.5 and adding for each part of alkali cellulose, 1.1-2 parts of methylchloride and 0.45-5 parts of propylene oxide, or its molecular equivalent of ethylene oxide, at a temperature below 40 DEG C. for a short time, followed by reaction at 60 DEG C. or higher, until etherification is complete.
