Abstract
A thermoplastic composition comprises (1) 2-90 per cent by weight of a water-soluble, thermoplastic hydroxyalkyl alkyl cellulose ether in which the hydroxyalkyl group contains 2 or 3 carbon atoms and the alkyl group has 1-3 carbon atoms and which has a melting point which is at least 10 DEG C. below the decomposition temperature; and (2) 98-10 per cent by weight of a plasticizer comprising a glycerol mono-2-hydroxyalkyl ether, glycerol bis-(2-hydroxyalkyl) ether or glycerol tris-(2-hydroxyalkyl) ether wherein each 2-hydroxyalkyl group contains 2 or 3 carbon atoms. Specified cellulose ethers are methyl hydroxyethyl and methyl hydroxypropyl cellulose ethers, in the preparation of which methyl chloride and ethylene oxide or propylene oxide may be added simultaneously to alkali cellulose below 40 DEG C. and reacted at 60 DEG C. Specified plasticizers are glycerol mono, bis and tris (2-hydroxypropyl) ethers and the corresponding 2-hydroxyethyl ethers. Examples are given.ALSO:Tris-(2-hydroxypropyl) glycerol ether is prepared by placing 1 molar part of glycerol and 3 molar parts of propylene oxide in a pressure vessel, together with 0.3 per cent sodium hydroxide as a 50 per cent aqueous solution, and heating the vessel to about 100 DEG C. to cause the reaction to proceed before cooling externally to assure constant pressure. Completion of the reaction is indicated by a pressure drop to a constant minimum value.
