Abstract
Quaternary ammonium halides are made by condensing an alkylbenzyl halide of the formula <FORM:0789794/IV (b)/1> wherein R1 is an alkyl radical, R2 is hydrogen o an alkyl radical and X is a halogen atom, for example dodecyl benzyl chloride, methyl dodecyl benzyl chloride or polydodecyl benzyl chloride (a mixture of monododecyl and didodecyl benzyl chlorides), with a tertiary amine such as trimethylamine, triethylamine, triethanolamine, dimethylbenzylamine, diethylethanolamine, pyridine, methylmorpholine or ethylmorpholine, in the presence of water, an alcohol or a solution of the two, and in the presence of 0.25 to 15 per cent by weight, based on the total weight of alkylbenzyl halide and tertiary amine present, of an alkali metal borate or acetate. Suitable alcohol solvents include aliphatic alcohols containing up to 4 carbon atoms, hexylene glycol, ethylene glycol and glycerol. The products are used as germicides. Examples describe the reaction of alkylbenzyl halides with tertiary amines in water or methanol in the presence of sodium acetate or sodium tetraborate according to the invention to give dodecylbenzyl trimethylammonium chloride and the corresponding triethanolammonium and pyridinium salts, methyldodecylbenzyl trimethylammonium chloride and polydodecylbenzyl trimethylammonium chloride. Starting materials. Dodecylbenzyl chloride, methyldodecylbenzyl chloride and polydodecylbenzyl chloride are made by treating dodecylmethyldodecyl or polydodecyl benzene with paraformaldehyde and phosphorus trichloride in methanol.
