Abstract

Cellulosic material is contacted with aqueous alkali in the presence of an inert organic diluent at temperatures of from 0 DEG to 30 DEG C. for 1 to 3 hours, the weight ratio of diluent to cellulosic material being from 6 to 19 parts diluent to one part cellulosic material, said diluent comprising by volume (a) 70-96% of a water miscible inert organic compound selected from aliphatic alcohols having 2-5 carbon atoms, dioxane, tetrahydrofuran, and acetone, (b) 0-16% of a second water miscible inert organic compound different from (a) and consisting of methyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol, or acetone, and (c) 4-15% water, the resulting alkali cellulose being etherified if desired to form the ether. A preferred diluent composition consists of isopropyl alcohol or tertiary butyl alcohol or a mixture of either of these alcohols with methyl or ethyl alcohol. The aqueous alkaline solution may be added to the cellulose and diluent in one or two stages. Thus all the caustic alkali may be added at the start of the alkali cellulose period, or alternatively, only a portion of the caustic alkali may be added at this stage, the remainder being added at the commencement of the etherification period. From the alkali cellulose so made, cellulose ethers may be obtained by the conventional slurry method, the aqueous solutions of which exhibit very low granularity, thixotropy and gel strength. Examples describe the manufacture of sodium carboxy methyl cellulose by treating the alkali cellulose so made with a 55% by weight solution of monochloracetic acid in 87% by weight aqueous solution of isopropyl alcohol at 70 DEG C. for 90 minutes. The product is neutralized with glacial acetic acid, washed with aqueous methanol, centrifuged, vacuum-dried and pulverized. Alkali cellulose made according to the invention, is stated to be useful in preparing all types of water-soluble and alkali-soluble cellulose ethers, e.g. hydroxyalkyl, carboxyalkyl, sulphoalkyl, and alkyl celluloses and cyanoethyl, carboxymethyl hydroxyethyl, carboxymethyl methyl, and methyl hydroxyethyl celluloses. Specifications 623,276, 670,672, 688,486 and U.S.A. Specification 2,580,352 are referred to.
