Abstract
Flame-resistant viscose cellulose material is made by producing a viscose regenerated cellulose product containing a minor proportion of cellulose substituted by a carboxy methyl, glycerol ether or carboxy ethyl group, and treating it with a compound of a metal which has flame-proofing properties (see Group VIII). The modification of the viscose product may be effected by adding carboxymethyl cellulose or the glycerol ether of cellulose, produced by reacting cellulose swollen in glycerol monochlorhydrin with alkali, to the viscose before spinning, by partial carboxy methylation of the original cellulose, e.g. by treatment with monochloracetic acid and alkali, or by treatment of the viscose with acrylonitrile. Tetraethyl orthosilicate may be added to the viscose. Besides fibres, other articles, such as film and flexible sheet, may be treated. U.S.A. Specification 2,489,651 is referred to.
