Carbohydrate ethers are obtained by the action of a mixture of alkylating agents, comprising a methyl or ethyl compound and an alkyl compound of which the alkyl group contains three or more carbon atoms, upon a cellulose, starch or other colloidal carbohydrate in the presence of caustic alkali. The mixed ethers have a marked strength and insensitivity to water and are suitable for making artificial silk, films, and plastic masses. In examples, cotton linters or purified pine wood cellulose are mixed with excess of 50 per cent caustic soda solution and heated with a mixture of ethyl chloride and propyl or butyl chloride at about 120‹ C. When the reaction is complete the excess of alkyl chlorides is distilled off and the crude product is washed with water. The mixed ethers are soluble in alcohol-benzene mixtures, and possess high tearing strength and low water expansion. The proportions of ethyl chloride and propyl or butyl chloride may be varied and products having ethoxy content of 33 per cent, propyl-oxy content 12 per cent, or ethoxy content 32 per cent, butyl-oxy content 14 per cent may be obtained.
