Cellulose ethers, and processes for making filaments and films therefrom.-Cellulose ethers insoluble in the usual simple solvents but soluble in mixed solvents are obtained by treating alkali cellulose with alkyl halide in the presence of water in quantity greater than twice the weight of alkali contained in the alkali-cellulose but not exceeding six times the weight of the cellulose contained in the alkali cellulose without the addition of caustic alkali or of alkali solution. The ethers are soluble in mixed solvents such as benzene-alcohol and dichlorethylene-alcohol; they give plastic masses, films and threads exhibiting an increased tenacity and of characteristic flexibility. In an example, cotton linters or sulphite cellulose are impregnated with 40 per cent caustic soda solution, pressed at 100 atmospheres and the pressed mass heated with water and an excess of ethyl chloride.
