Abstract

Transparent films are prepared by extruding a solution of a soluble alginate, which alginate has a viscosity of not less than 10 centipoises at 15 DEG C. in a 1 per cent solution, into a bath of a precipitant containing calcium ions, for example, a calcium chloride solution. In an example, calcium alginate having a viscosity of 250 centipoises is soaked in hydrochloric acid, and the alginic acid dissolved in sodium carbonate solution to give a 7 per cent solution. This solution is extruded through a slot into a 10 per cent solution of calcium chloride, and the film washed and passed through a glycerol bath. Specification 415,042 is referred to.
