Abstract
A process for the manufacture of viscose, designed to employ substantially the whole of the original cellulose including the hemicellulose, comprises steeping the cellulose in 17-25 per cent caustic soda solution, pressing the alkali-cellulose so-formed to remove the caustic soda liquor containing hemicellulose, xanthating the alkali cellulose by treatment with carbon disulphide, dialysing at least part of the caustic soda liquor from the pressing and adding to the reject liquor from the dialysis any remaining portion of the "pressings" to form a xanthate dissolving liquor, the concentration of which is adjusted, by dilution or addition of dilute caustic soda solution, to 3.5 per cent by weight, and finally mixing this liquor with the xanthate to form viscose. The original cellulose may be in the form of a slurry or in sheets during steeping.
