Abstract

842,607. Variable resistors. PLESSEY CO. Ltd. Feb. 11, 1957 [Feb. 16, 1956], No. 4826/56. Class 37. In a variable resistor the electrically operative elements are formed as a sub-assembly ready for the insertion of the actuating spindle. A body 1 of insulating material has a resistance track 2 and a contact ring 3 set in one face and is pierced by a central hole into which a bush 7 is fitted which carries the contact carrier 4. The contacts 5 and 6 which engage the tracks 2 and 3 are carried by the contact carrier 4 which also provides the pressure to maintain the bush 7 in position against the restraint of the retaining member 12 bearing on the washer 14. The contact carrier 4 has lugs 10 which fit into recesses 11 on the flange 9 which is integral with the bush 7. A lug 15 on the flange 9 may be used to operate an on-off switch and a lug 16 may be used as a limit stop. The bore 17 of the bush 7 is provided with serrations 18 to engage a splined shaft 24, which is retained in the housing base 27 by spring rings 28. Two sub-assemblies may be mounted on a common shaft or on separate coaxial shafts Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown). A combined plastic shaft and knob may be used with one sub-assembly to produce a pre-set variable resistor, Fig. 6 (not shown).
