Abstract

887,379. Variable resistors. FALCO, E. May 6, 1960 [Sept. 7, 1959], No. 16107/60. Class 37. [Also in Group XXXVII] In an electrical device the base and a rotatable knob are made of a resiliently-deformable insulating synthetic material, e.g. a polyamide, and have mating cylindrical surfaces on their peripheries, co-operating radial annular flange and groove means formed on these surfaces being interengageable by resilient deformation of said material for rotatably interconnecting the base and the knob without any axial pivot means therebetween. The invention is shown applied to a combined switch and variable resistor, wherein the base 19 carries the resistor element 12 which is secured by terminals 17, 18, and the knob 1 carries an annular wiping contact 8. The latter has notches 6, 7 engaged by lugs 4, 5 on the knob for rotation therewith and has a contact tongue 10 engaging the element 12, and a tongue 11 engaging a terminal plate 13. The knob also has a lug 3 engageable with a recess 40 in a contact plate 36 which can be pivoted about an axis 38 to bridge fixed switch contacts 23a, 24. A surface 42 adjacent contact 24 gives an indication when the arm 39 of plate 36 is near the closed position. The base has an annular flange 35 engaging a groove 2 in the knob, to provide for rotation of the latter and to render the easing dust-proof.
