Abstract

658,395. Regulating switches. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Oct. 17, 1949, No. 26598. Convention date, Oct. 21, 1948. [Class 38(v)] A rheostat comprises an annular insulating plate 2 carrying U- shaped resistance elements 4, the legs of which embrace the plate. The elements are connected in series by L-shaped contacts 6, the short arms of which project through holes 5 in plate .2, the legs 4a, 4b, respectively of each element being welded to adjacent contacts 6. The latter are. secured between a hub 14 and the plate 2 and their ends project into the aperture in the centre of plate 2, when they are engaged by a brush 29 on a member 28 carrying a second brush 27 permanently in contact with a conducting ring 26 connected to a terminal 12 by aconductor 13. Terminals 8, 9 are connected to the ends of the resistance by conductors 10, 11, secured to the centre of plate 2, where they are in secured to a brush housing 21 by springs 30, 31 which urge the brushes into engagement with the contacts, the housing being secured to the end 19a of spindle 19 by a nut 24. The operating member 25 has a part 25a movable in an annular recess 14e in the hub 14, two adjustable stops 32a, 33a being provided to limit 'the rotation. The hub and plate -2 are held together by a metal cover comprising parts 15, 16 welded together and having mounting holes at their corners 17, the free space in the cover being filled with an insulating cement.
