Abstract

599,831. Swivelling couplings. LEE, B., and CHEVERTON, F. June 19, 1945, No. 15578. [Class 38 (i)] A rotary electric coupling for at least two line connections comprises a shell-like member closed by an inwardly-directed flange at one end and enclosing a head portion having a hub passing through the flange. The head portion rotates on ball-races, all of which carry line connections through the coupling and at least one of which is located between the head portion and the inwardly-directed flange. Figs. 1 and 2 show a shell 1 fitted with a screw cover 9 and having an inwardly-directed flange 3 surrounding a hub 4 which carries a head 5, of insulating material, rotatable on two concentric ball-races 6, 7 arranged between the head and the flange, which provide electrical connections to contact strips 12, 13 connected to terminals 17, 18 on the terminal platform 8. The ball-races are connected electrically to a pair of contacts in the surface of the hub 4, which may co-operate with interchangeable terminal elements 30 of the kind described in Specification 474,074. Terminal 24 has a tubular extension 26, housing a spring contact plunger 27 bearing upon a contact plate 28 which is connected to a third contact in the surface of the hub. A ball-race may be fitted as shown between the plunger and the contact plate. The third line connection through the centre of the device may be omitted and a spring fitted to press together the head and the flange. In a modification (not shown), for two line connections, one ball-race only separates the head from the flange.
