Abstract
667,719. Switch contacts. WHITFIELD, E. H., and WELWYN LABORATORIES, Ltd. March 21, 1950. No. 6983/50. Class 38 (v). [Also in Groups XXIV and XXXVI] A radial switch arm is locked on to a switch spindle by providing it with a hole which fits on to the similarly shaped end of the shaft and is so arranged that when pushed on beyond its normal position and rotated through a right angle it becomes locked when the external axial thrust is removed, due to a thrust in the opposite direction exerted by either the spring pressure of the radial member or an addition spring. In the potentiometer shown the end of the operating spindle 3 is formed with a shoulder 5 over which fits a correspondingly shaped aperture 6 in the radial contact member shown in Fig. 3. The shaft 3 is also formed with a shoulder 7, Fig. 4, with which a corresponding slot 8 in the contact member engages when it is thrust in beyond its normal position and turned through a right angle. On releasing the thrust the springiness of the contact member maintains the slots 8 and shoulder 7 in engagement so that relative rotation between the contact member and the shaft is prevented. Alternatively, a further spring may be inserted between the contact member and the shaft for this purpose. The invention is also applicable to rotary switches, contactors, &c.
