In a rectilinear combing machine, the top back detaching roller 15 is loaded by a lever 16 pivoted at 17 and having two depending legs 162, 163; leg 162 is connected by a spring 18 with a movable operating lever 19, 20 which can be locked in spring-tensioning position by a catch 22; leg 163 co-operates with an abutment 191, which, when catch 22 is released to allow arm 20 to fall to a vertical position, engages leg 163 and swings lever 16 up into an inoperative position where a bearing surface 161 is clear of the roller neck. The top front detaching roller 14 is loaded by a hook 23 acted on by a spring 24 which is substantially aligned with a line joining the axes of roller 14 and its bottom roller 12. The bearing surface 231 of hook 23 is flattened at 232 so that it may be drawn forwardly along a guide surface 27 to remove loading pressure from roller 14. A clearer block 28 rests upon rollers 14, 15 and is located by pins 29 engaging slots 30 in levers 16 so that the clearer is reciprocated over the rollers in synchronism with the rocking movement of roller 15 about its bottom roller 13.
