Abstract

897,616. Drafting-apparatus. T.M.M. (RESEARCH) Ltd. March 9, 1961 [April 8, 1960], No. 12589/60. Class 120(2) Relates to drafting-apparatus of the type wherein one of the two co-operating sets of drafting rollers or other elements, 10, 12 and 13, 15, is supported by a common carrier 23 which can be pivoted between operative and inoperative positions in which latter the elements which it supports are separated from the other set, and wherein the act of moving the carrier to and securing it in the operative position is effective to apply resilient loading pressure between the pairs of drafting elements. In such apparatus, the first set of elements 10, 12 are carried by members 16, 17 mounted on a platform 18 so as to be separately pivotable about an axis 19 normal to the drafting-plane, the platform being supported so as to be movable to separate the two sets of drafting-elements, a loading-arm 23 and a spring exerting pressure in the members 16, 17 being provided, with means to lock the loading-arm in load-applying position. The platform 18 has spaced side-walls apertured to receive pins 24, 26. The former is carried on a bracket 21 secured to a rail 22 and provides a pivot for arm 23; the latter provides a pivot for a lever 30 projecting through the side-walls of arm 23 into the side-walls of lever 30 which is of U-section and embraces arm 23. The pin 26 also provides an anchorage for a leaf-spring 25 which bears at 27 on member 16 which in turn bears at 28 on member 16. Spring 25 is loaded when lever 30 is secured to lock arm 23 by the engagement of a roller 29 on the lever with a cam surface 31 carried by bracket 21. The pressure exerted by the spring can be varied by inserting shims between it and arm 23 at 251 or by means of a set screw in arm 23. With the parts in the positions shown, the rollers can be separated by raising lever 30 about pin 26 and then raising arm 23 about pivot 24; as arm 23 moves, the pin 26 takes the platform with it and so causes members 16, 17 with their associated rollers to be raised. The bearing-elements 27, 28 each consist of a part pivoted between lugs, e.g. 171, 172, the part having an arcuate contact surface which is eccentric to its pivot axis, so that while allowing lateral movement between the two surfaces with which it is associated, it tends to restrict it. The loading-arm may be pivoted to inoperative position independently of the platform-member 18 and the members 16, 17.
