Abstract
898,803. Drafting-apparatus. T.M.M. (RESEARCH) Ltd. April 4, 1961 [April 5, 1960], No. 12045/60. Class 120(2) In drafting apparatus of the type in which one of the sets of drafting elements, e.g. the upper, is supported by a common carrier which can be moved pivotally or otherwise between an operative position and an inoperative one in which the elements supported thereby are displaced from the co-operating set of drafting- elements, and in which when the carrier is moved to and secured in operative position resilient loading-pressure is applied between the pairs of drafting-elements, each upper drafting element is separately supported by said carrier through the medium of an individual arm which is mounted on the carrier for pivotal movement about an axis substantially normal to the plane of the drawing zone, which terminates in a holder for the arbor &c. of the drafting element and which is itself resilient so as to be capable of being stressed to exert a loading force on said element when the carrier is secured in the operative position. In Fig. 1, each element, e.g. a pair of adjacent rollers 10 is carried by an arm 21 of metal strip bent at one end 213 and formed with a clip-bearing 2121 at the other. The end 213 is disposed between abutments 201, 202 adjustably secured by a screw 2021 in a slot in a carrier 20. Balls 22, 23 are provided in seatings between the end and the abutments, ball 22 serving as a pivot, while ball 23 acts as a skid for the arm 21. The carrier is secured in working position, and the strips 21 tensioned, by a catch-member 27 pivotally carried thereby at 26 which has hook-ends 272 engaging recesses 193 in a part 192, Fig. 5, upstanding from a bracket 191 secured to a fixed rail 25 extending between adjacent roller stands. The hooks can be released by depressing a thumb piece 271 projecting above the top of the carrier against the force of a retaining-spring 28 anchored to the carrier. Tensor bars 19 for adjacent lower apron elements are integral with the bracket 191 and to locate the elements the carrier has slotted ears to engage over the flanks 194 of the part 192. The strips can be changed for others to vary the loading-force and they are prevented from disengaging the carrier when the latter is lifted by lugs 24. The bearing 2121 of the front upper element has a member 2123 supporting a clearer roller 142 and provided with a finger-piece so that the element may be raised for removing roller-laps. A cradle, Fig. 7, for a top-apron assembly comprises tensors 18 carried by brackets 182 resting on a roll-arbor 121 and secured to a cross-bar 181, the tensors being tensioned by a spring 31 pressing against the bearing 2121 and bent as shown partly to encircle the arbor. In Fig. 3, member 191 has two bars 197 which are engaged by ears on the carrier to locate the drafting elements, catchmember 27 engaging the upper one to hold down the carrier and load the elements. In Fig. 4, the catch-member 29 has a pin 291 working in slots 292 in the carrier, the pin also serving to secure the catch-member to a toggle lever 30 pivoted to the carrier at 301 and having a finger piece 302. With the lever 30 in the position shown, catch-member 29 is raised to a position where its hooked-end engages the upper bar 197: when lever 30 is moved anti-clockwise, pin 291 moves in the slots and takes the catch-member to the position shown in chain-lines where it disengages bar 197. The carrier 20 may pivot about a rail 32, Fig. 8, extending longitudinally of the machine and carries a spring 33 engaging a notch 34 to hold the carrier in raised position. It is locked in operative position by the engagement of a member 27 with a cross-bar 36 which is part of the bottom apron cradle.
