A quick release device for a clothes wringer comprises a locking device pivoted to a frame member and carrying a latching device engaging a spring urging the rollers towards one another, a release arm having two thrust surfaces and secured to pivot with a release bar in either of two directions, and means arranged that movement of the release arm in either direction will turn the locking arm to release the spring. As shown, the upper frame member 10 is urged into engagement with the lower member by the cammed end 47 of a torsion bar which engages a roller 46. The release bar has a flattened end 37 pivoted to the frame member 10 at 38 and on an extension has a pin 54 pivoted to it at 58. Also pivoted at 38 is a small channel section saddle 62 which abuts section 37 with its surface 66 and has projecting portions 64 which bear on the inside surface of a locking arm 42, pivoted to the frame at 44 and carrying roller 46. The mechanism is shown in the closed position. If the release bar is depressed it rotates about the pivot 38 and causes the pin 54 to press against the horizontal portion 58 of the locking arm 42 with the result that the locking arm rotates anticlockwise about 44 and the roller 46 is disengaged from the torsion bar. If the release arm is raised, its rotation about the pivot 38 is accompanied by an equal rotation of the saddle 62, the projecting portions 64 of which engage the inside surface of a web 48 causing the locking arm to rotate anticlockwise and release the torsion bar. In a second embodiment the release bars are connected to a release link which in one direction of movement of the bars moves the locking arm directly and in the other direction moves the locking arm indirectly.
