[Class 138 (ii)] A flat-iron comprises a support which is movable between its operative and inoperative positions and comprises a supporting leg 11 adapted, when in the inoperative position, to be received in a recess 36 provided in the ironing surface of the iron in spaced relation to the side edges thereof and preferably midway between them. A transverse member 10, which carries the leg 11, extends the full width of the iron and is provided with upstanding portions which are pivoted at 14 on lugs 8 carried by a bracket 6 on the rear of the sole plate 3. Upper arms 12 on the upstanding portions are engaged by a cross-bar 16, a helical spring 17, which is anchored between this member and the bracket 6, urging the support 9 to its inoperative position. The recess 36 in the sole plate 3 is both wider and deeper than the leg 11 and at its front end is provided with a step 37 so as to maintain the leg slightly out of contact with the base of the recess. The operating mechanism for the support comprises a roller 13 on the upper arms 12 for cooperation with a cam 24 on the rear end of a lever 22 which is pivoted at 23 in the handle 2, Latch mechanism for holding the support in its inoperative position is similar to that described in U.S.A. Specification 2,296,913 and comprises a latch bar 28 which co-operates at its front end with a hook-shaped latch 31 and is pivoted on a finger-operated knob 26 mounted on the pivot 23 of the lever 22. A helical spring 33 urges the latch bar 28 to its operative position. When the handle is gripped for turning the iron down into its position of use, the user depresses the projecting saddle member 25 of the lever 22, whereby the cam 24 engages the roller 13 and moves the support 9 so that the leg 11 enters the recess 36; at the same time, the latch members 28, 31 latch the arm 22 and support 9 in this position. When the iron is to be tilted to its supported position, the knob 26 is moved forwardly so as to disengage the latch members 28, 31, and the spring 17 is then effective to raise the iron to its supported position. In a modified arrangement, the spring 17 may be dispensed with, the parts then being latched in the position shown in Fig. 2 by means as described in U.S.A. Specifications 2,308,106 and 2,308,125.
