Abstract
684,681. Ironing-presses. GUDGEON, R. P., and BROWN & GREEN, Ltd. Sept. 19, 1950. [Aug. 29, 1949] No. 22425/49. Class 138 (ii). A laundry press comprises a pressing surface, an article-supporting surface, and resilient means for effecting pressing engagement of one surface progressively along the other to produce a relative sliding movement between the surfaces. In the example an article supporting buck 1 is movable into engagement with a fixed buck 8 and one of the bucks is pivoted about an axis perpendicular to the path of the movable buck and means are provided for urging the pivoted buck to a position inclined with respect to the other buck. As shown in Fig. 2 the under surface of the lower buck has a V-shaped groove 13 extending across its width and adapted to seat on a fulcrum bar 3 of substantially semicircular cross section secured to a support 4. The movable buck is urged to an inclined position by an asymmetrical spring arrangement comprising three springs interposed between the movable buck 1 and its support 4, two of which (not shown in Fig. 2) are positioned to one side of the fulcrum bar 3 and the other (6a) on the other side. An adjustable stop 9 is provided for limiting the inclination of the movable buck. The spring 6a is of double helical form and acts through a bolt 14 secured to the buck 1. The buck 1 is mounted on a pillar or plunger 7 moved vertically by hydraulic means or by a power driven cam arrangement. When raised into pressing position the higher end of the buck 1 contacts the buck 8 first and then a slipping movement occurs between the pressing surfaces until the two are in full engagement. This slipping movement improves the finished appearance of the pressed shirt or other garment. The lower buck may be provided with a neckband attachment 11 as described in Specification 684,682 and this is received in a recess 12 in the upper buck. In a modification the movable buck is mounted horizontally and the fixed buck urged to an inclined position.
