1379488 Measuring device BENDIX CORP 1 March 1972 [1 March 1971] 9626/72 Heading G1M A measuring device includes a vertically movable probe 64 mounted on a Y axis carriage 10, and an X axis carriage 146. The Y axis carriage 10 is supported by a pair of horizontal rollers 16, 18 on a horizontal way 52, and is guided by a further roller 56 engaging horizontal way 60 which is adjustable. The rollers 16 and 18 are mounted to the carriage 10 by prestressed bearings Fig.3 (not shown), and are mounted eccentrically so as to be adjustable. The rollers 16 and 18 co-operate with convex surfaces 32 ground on way 52. Rollers 51, 53 mounted on adjustable leaf springs Fig. 4 (not shown), maintain rollers 16, 18 and 56 in contact with their respective ways. A lock and fine traverse mechanism for the Y axis carriage comprises a pair of levers 88, 90 pivotally mounted on the carriage and urged apart at their lower ends by spring 94, a brake bar 100 of oval cross-section and a threaded rod 110 aligned with threaded cutouts 116, 118 in the levers. To frictionally lock the carriage, bar 100 is turned to a horizontal position so that levers 88, 90 grip both bar 100 and threaded rod 110. The carriage may then be moved by turning threaded rod 110. The X axis carriage 146 is supported by a pair of rollers 148, 150 running on way 151, and is guided by a further roller 154 mounted on the end of a stabilizing spar 152 and running on a way 156. A lock and fine traverse mechanism similar to the one described above is provided for the X axis carriage Fig. 10 (not shown), and brake bar 170 and threaded rod 180 may be rotated from the front of the device by knobs 177, 187 via right angle transmission elements 178, 188. The vertical probe 64 may be provided with a counterweight.
