[Also in Division G3] In a system for maintaining uniformity in a sliver passing between drafting rollers, movement of a rounded bar extending across the whole width of the sliver, and urged towards the sliver, by leaf springs at each end of the bar, controls the relative speeds of the rollers. In Fig. 1 a sliver 3 is drafted between rollers 1,2 running at different speeds. A bar 4, mounted at each end of leaf springs 5, presses against the underside of the sliver and thus varies in position according to the drafting force in the sliver. Strain gauges 6, detecting movements of springs 5, are arranged in a bridge-amplifier circuit 7 which, automatically controls the relative speeds of rollers 1,2 in such a manner as to maintain the drafting force constant. In modifications (a) strain gauges are associated with both sides of the leaf springs for temperature compensation, (b) bolometers are utilised to detect spring movements, (c) movements of the bar or springs influences a differential inductance, a differential capacity, light falling on a photo-cell, or a piezo-electric device to control the relative speeds.
