Abstract

836,587. Sleeve couplings; junction boxes; stripping cables. OLYMPIC CABLES PROPRIETARY Ltd. April 4, 1956 [April 4, 1955], No. 10301/56. Classes 36 and 38 (1). A T-joint between bared portions of cables 21, 22 is formed by inserting the end of cable 22 through an aperture in an open ferrule 25, Fig. 5, heavily coated on the inside with soft metal and then placing cable 21 between the separated ends of the strands of cable 22. The ferrule and the strands of cable 22 are then closed round cable 21 as shown in Fig. 6 and the joint enclosed in a two-part casing 26, 32 shown in Figs. 8 and 10. The casing is formed of material similar to that of the cable sheaths, e.g. P.V.C. and each part has a central recess 27 to accommodate the joint and transversely corrugated recesses 28, 29 communicating therewith which grip the cable-sheaths in a watertight manner. An interfitting rib 30 and recess 31 on the parts further serves to exclude moisture and the two parts may also be bonded together by a suitable composition in addition to securing screws or circlips. In making a straight-through joint the bared ends of cables 34, 35, Fig. 12, are placed side-by-side in a sleeve 38 which is then compressed to bring the cables into line. The joint (or joints in the case of a multi-core cable) is then enclosed in a two-part casing 42, Fig. 16, similar to that shown in Figs. 8 and 10, except that the entry 29 for the branch cable is omitted. Figs. 17 and 18 show a hand tool for stripping the insulation of the cables and which has jaws 44, 45 held together under a toggle action when the handles are squeezed together. Each jaw has two end blades 46 and a longitudinal blade 47 so dimensioned that when the tool is rotated on a cable it will strip off the insulation without damaging the conductor.
