Abstract

1,237,399. Wire-wrapping tool. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. 30 April, 1969 [30 April, 1968], No. 20372/68. Heading B3E. A tool for making wrapped electrical connections using insulated wire comprises a bit 1 having insulating severing means 21 and which is rotatable relative to a sleeve 2, the bit being adapted to embrace a terminal and on rotation about the terminal to wrap a wire around it. In operation the bit 1 and sleeve 2 are aligned so that the insulated wire can be freely passed from the leading edge 13 of the tool, over the blade 21, into a groove 14 and through a shearing hole 41. The other end of the wire is left sufficiently long to reach between the two terminals that are required to be connected and to wrap one of them. The hole 12 in the bit is then placed over the terminal and the free end of the wire is anchored by passing it through a notch 37. The bit 1 is rotated in a clockwise direction as viewed by the operator causing shearing of the surplus wire protruding from the shearing hole 41. At the same time the insulated wire lying in groove 45 and thus in the gap in a ring cutter 44, Fig. 11, is thrust by the wall of groove 16 out of the sleeve groove 45 and into the space between the ring cutter 44 and the blade 21 thus severing the insulation. Rotation of the bit 1 against the tension in the anchored wire drags the wire along the groove 14. The ring cutter 44 and the blade 21 block the passage of the severed insulation so that as the bit 1 is rotated, first the insulated wire and then the bare wire are wrapped around the terminal. As the trailing end of the wire rounds the bend into a V-shaped area 23 a countersunk surface 28 presses the end against the terminal. The tool is removed and the previously anchored end of the wire is inserted into the leading end of the tool. The tool is then applied, tied as it is to the first terminal, to the second terminal and the operation repeated.
