Abstract

1,193,832. Making wrapped electrical connections. GENERAL ELECTRIC & ENGLISH ELECTRIC COMPANIES Ltd. 17 May, 1968 [19 May, 1967], No. 23316/67. Headings B3A and B3E. A device for making wrapped electrical connections has means 26 for splitting or otherwise longitudinally severing the insulation on the wire so that the connection is made between bare metal of the wire and the terminal. The tool 1 of the device includes a bit 10 having an axially eccentric hole 12, which fits over terminals 5. Wire is supplied from a reel 4 through a tube 27 which communicates with a slot 18 in the bit 10 via an axially concentric hole 19. The bit is rotatable within a sleeve 11 and its front end face 24 has the form of one turn of a helix of a pitch approximating to the diameter of the insulated wire. At the transition between the groove 18 and the helical face 24 is formed the projection 26 for slitting the insulation of the wire and keeping the slit insulation apart as the exposed wire is wrapped on to a terminal 5. In operation the wired tool is applied to a terminal, which enters the hole 12, and the sleeve 11 is pressed down on the board 6. The protruding wire is positioned in a notch (22) at the end of the sleeve, Fig. 5 (not shown) the notches being in predetermined rotational relation with the groove 18. The terminals 5 are preferably of square or rectangular cross-section to produce high contact pressure between the bared wire and the terminal. As the tool is moved between terminals, wire is drawn through it, but it is not drawn over the projection 26 so the insulation is not severed.
