Abstract

In a process for the removal of the external insulation of single- or multi-core cables, a baring tool is used to cut around the insulation using blades 8, 10, and the cut insulation provided with a longitudinal cut on at least one side using blade 12. The cutting edge 12 continues to be engaged in the split when the longitudinal cut has been effected, and the zone of cut insulation is subsequently detached from its internal supporting surface with the tool by means of a rotary movement and is stripped off under the clamping action of the tool. The handles (3, 4 Fig. 1) of the tool are spring apart and the tool has further cutting blades (14, 15) which are spaced apart to cut into the insulation but not the core of the cable. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Process and tool for baring cables The invention relates to a process and a device for the removal of the external insulation of single- or multi-core cables.
For the removal of the insulation sheath or single- or multi-core cables there has been hitherto used a pair of baring tongs which is provided with cutting edges for circular and longitudinal cuts and which comprises two half-shells which are complementarily opposite to each other and have been adapted approximately to the cable external curve. The halfshells extend transversely to the tongs jaws in accordance with the length of the insulation to be cut off, there being provided at its faces cutting edges projecting into the half-shell space and being opposite to each other. Beneath one half-shell there is provided, opposite to an impact plate, another longitudinal cutting edge on the tongs limb, also in the length of the half-shells. It serves for effecting the longitudinal cut in the insulation.
The longitudinal piece of the insulation to be separated or cut from the cable sheathing is clamped between the half-shells, the cutting edges penetrating into the insulation and, caused by the rotation of the tongs, cutting into the insulation by way of a circular cut.
Thereafter, the separated part of the insulation is clamped between the impact plate and the longitudinal knife, the latter performing the longitudinal cut. It has been proposed to remove the insulation thus cut off also with the aid of the tongs, in that the external edges of the half-shells are applied to the longitudinal cut and are pulled away while they are clamped one upon the other.
It has turned out in practice that this operation cannot be carried out satisfactorily. The edges of the half-shells are too blunt to allow the insulation to be gripped and to be taken hold of and be clamped to such an extent as the pulling force to be applied requires. The result is that the tongs slip from the insulation.
The invention has set itself the task or eliminating this disadvantage of the prior art with a process and a baring tool for the performance of the process, the object being that the baring tool, due to an appropriate design, will enable the cut insulation to be stripped off in several process steps without virtually any problem.
According to the invention, this task is solved by a process for the removal of the external insulation of single- or multi-core cables by means of a baring tool as described in the introductory part of Claim 1 according to the features given in the characterising part
of this claim.
Further particulars and advantages of the invention are detailed in the Sub-Claims.
The invention is illustrated in detail with the aid of an exemplified embodiment in the drawings, in which: Figure 1 shows a diagrammatical view of the baring tongs, Figure 2 shows a partly diagrammatical view of the baring tongs in the circular-cut position, and Figure 3 shows a partly diagrammatical view of the baring tongs in the longitudinalcut position.
The baring tongs consist in known manner of the tongs jaws 1, 2 with handles 3, 4 which are pivotally movable around the pivot point 5 against spring pressure, and furthermore of the half-shells 6, 7 which are provided transversely to the tongs jaws 1, 2 and have, at their faces, cutting edges 8, 9, 10, 11 projecting on either side into the shell halfspace. They carry out the circular cut during the stripping of the cable 1 3.
According to the invention, the longitudinal cutting edge 12, which is required for performing the longitudinal cut into the insulation, is fitted unilaterally on one half-shell, namely on the half-shell 6, on the external upper edge thereof, in the exemplified embodiment. This has the advantage that, in addition to its cutting task, the longitudinal cutting edge 1 2 can be used for stripping off the insulation which has been separated after the circular and longitudinal cuts have been performed. This is effected according to the following process steps: When the longitudinal cut has been made, the cutting edge 1 2 stays in the split while the opposite half-shell 7 is pressed on, the rotation of the tongs causing the split to be ripped open and the cut insulation piece to be detached from its interior supporting surface and, as the half-shells 6, 7 are brought close thereto, to be finally be stripped off completely under the clamping action of the latter.
Another feature of the invention is, with the side cutter with the cutting edges 14, 1 5 provided beneath the jaws 6, 7, to the effect that, with the tongs limbs 1, 2 closed, the cutting edges 14, 1 5 do not touch each other but form a gap 1 6 between them. The gap 1 6 makes it impossible for the cable core or conductor to be damaged when the side cutter is used.
CLAIMS 1. A process for the removal of the external insulation or single- or multi-core cables by means of a baring tool, which causes the insulation to be bared to be cut all around in the zone to be bared and the cut insulation to be provided with a longitudinal cut on at least one side, preferably in the zone of the largest diameter, characterised in that the cutting edge for the longitudinal cut continues to be engaged in the split when the longitudinal cut has been effected, and in that the zone of the
