836,277. Electric arc furnaces. DEMAGELEKTROMETALLURGIE G.m.b.H. Jan. 13, 1958 [Feb. 4, 1957], No. 1210/58. Class 39(3) An arc melting furnace comprises a container 1 resting on a tiltable cradle carried by supports 2, 3. Vertical columns 4 having supporting arms 5 which carry electrodes 6 are independently supported on a separate cradle having supports 13, 14 which can be locked either to the container cradle 2, 3 or to a stationary anchoring block 17 by means of slidable bolts 15 and 16 respectively. Each column 4 includes a cantilever arm 9 carrying the furnace cover 12 and rests on a common base 10 which can be swivelled sideways around a pivot stud 11. In operation, the separate cradle is locked to the container cradle and can move with it when the latter is tilted a small amount, eg. for the removal of slag. When the container is to be tilted a considerable amount, e.g. to be emptied, the electrodes are lifted clear and the separate cradle locked to the stationary anchoring block.
